Simple Design Tips To Make An Old Bathroom Look More Modern
An old bathroom can make your entire home feel dated, but with a full bathroom remodel costing more than $10,000 on average, you may not be able to afford to fully renovate the bathroom immediately. Thankfully, there are some interior design tips you can implement to make your older bathroom look more modern without spending a fortune.
1. Change the fixtures.
Nothing dates a bathroom like an old faucet with separate hot and cold taps. If you simply switch out this faucet with a modern one that has a single handle, your entire sink setup will look more modern. The same holds true in the shower, especially if, as in so many bathrooms, the shower fixtures have accumulated a lot of limescale buildup.
2. Paint cabinets white.
Colored cabinets were really popular in bathrooms for a while. If you're lucky enough to have some of these relics in your bathroom, just paint them white. The whole room will take on a fresher appearance. Make sure you use a good primer beneath the white, as you may need it to camouflage the color.
3. Replace a few cabinets with shelves.
Open shelves are a very modern touch. Even if you change nothing else, they will make your bathroom feel more modern. See if there is a cabinet you can take down and replace with a few custom-made shelves. Even if you must pay to have them professionally installed, this is a pretty affordable upgrade considering how much it transforms the space.
4. Hang some modern art that makes the old-fashioned features seem quirky.
Maybe your bathroom has old pink tile, or perhaps there's a floral print on the cabinets. If you're able to echo this feature in a piece of artwork on the wall, it will look intentional and artsy rather than purely outdated. You might have to get creative and make your own framed piece of tile or something but have fun with it.
5. Add some greenery.
Plants instantly make any space feel more modern and open, including the bathroom. Add a snake plant or some ivy to the corner or window ledge. If you are not able to keep a real plant alive, you can use fake plants instead. Today, there are some very convincing replicas available.
With the tips above, your old-fashioned bathroom will take on an updated look without you having to spend a fortune or months working on it. If you need any extra help updating the look of your bathroom, then talk with an interior designer.
